Attention! We are please to offer a heat-sink kit for the G540. Optional heat-sink shown installed in second picture above. You can order the heat-sink kit and EZ-G540 as a package with your G540 and save money too! The G540 is a complete 4-axis system which plugs directly into your computer or a SmoothStepper via an M-M parallel port cable and to your motors through DB9 connectors. It contains four of Gecko G250 drives which plug into an optically isolated breakout board all housed in a hard anodized aluminum case. G540 Specifications:

You probably can't destroy this thing without a hammer, I know, I've tried. I also know that their support is really good too - I have only spoken with them, never done an RMA - it was not needed.
The G540 will likely be the first recommendation you will get for a driver from people who have used them, as long as your requirements are within the spec for it. It is easy to set up and configure - just take a look at the manual, it is just a few pages not a novel with a design that requires setting a bunch of jumpers. It does require a parallel port though which is getting harder to find - but not if you run it with a cheap older desktop.
I run it with a CNC'ed X3 which has 2 NEMA 23's and one under driven NEMA34 on the Z with no problems so far. I am adding a 4th axis which may be pushing my power supply, but I have no doubt the Gecko can handle it. The only additions I would recommend are the EZ-G540 which makes setting the resistor values easy, and a heat sink will help too (I have been going without one, but will be picking up a compatible surplus heat sink shortly).
